Horseback Riding
As an ACA accredited camp, we have exceptionally high standards for safety in all activities – particularly horseback riding. Our barn managers are CHA Certified Instructors who have extensive experience with horses and have been through a week-long intensive training and evaluation process from a national independent evaluator. Both camp directors are also CHA certified, which means they are heavily involved in supervising the activity. Campers take riding for one hour each day. Safety is stressed as our number one priority at the stables. The children are not allowed to get on a horse until they’ve heard the “safety talk.” Riders then must display their comfort in the riding ring before advancing to the trails. On the trail rides, we typically have 1 or 2 “walkers,” along with one lead instructor. The walkers are barn assistants who walk next to the horses to provide extra comfort to inexperienced riders. For our more experienced riders, we allow some trotting at a highly supervised location after they’ve proven to be comfortable at trotting. Additionally, we own our horses, which means they work well together and know the routine and trails. Thanks to our safety precautions and prevention training, we have had very few falls, and no serious injuries in 30 years. Riders must wear long pants and smooth-soled shoes with heels such as cowboy or riding boots (hiking boots with lugged soles are not suitable for riding). Helmets are required and provided by the camp. Horseback riding is optional (see fee schedule for details.) HORSEBACK RIDING SPOTS ARE FULL JUNE 19 – JULY 1ST. Click on photos for larger images. |
